100 Days: The Persistent Undoing of Us

Amidst the turmoil and chaos that the first few months of 2025 has brought, I found solace in data. 100 pages for the first 100 days of the 47th presidency. On one side, it presents daily headlines, and on the other, daily pictures of the same spot on Lake Michigan captured by the web cam stationed at Holland State Park in Michigan. Finally, it is cut to illustrate the pattern of the lake’s waves ebbing and flowing, as captured from a buoy in Holland and reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Creating this book was a way for me to grapple with questions like: How do our politics affect nature’s rhythms? How do nature’s rhythms affect us? How do we find grounding and stability when things are churning around us? How do we stand for what we believe in and support those around us, when things feel so chaotic?
At a time when I feel so angry and discouraged with the systems of power that hurt us and threaten our health and wellbeing, the lake’s steady rhythms remind me of how deep and persistent this work of resistance must be. It brings me renewed energy, calm, and hope to keep ever working for change.
