The idea for Embody / In Body came from my experience of parenting through the pandemic. Coming of age in a time of online learning, virtual friendship, and heightened awareness of illness and germs, our kids now face challenges of loneliness and anxiety. Social media feeds, video games, messaging apps, and the news cycle take us out of our bodies. In this landscape, we are unpracticed and fearful of being rooted in our physical bodies.

There is an grounding technique known as the 54321 Method, which helps with anxiety by focusing the mind on the five senses. Embody / In Body is a tool for this practice of embodiment. Practiced as a daily ritual, perhaps we could build awareness and memory of being in our bodies. Then, when anxiety arises, this practice is easier to remember. Living in a time of fear and uncertainty, we need daily rituals to ground us and root us in our bodies. Embodiment is a right to which every human has access and through which we connect to our humanity.
