24 years, 388 schools, 201 killed, 429 injured, more than 360,000 students directly affected. Code red drills, code yellow drills, metal detectors, random bag checks, teacher and administrator trainings, active shooter preparedness policies. All this so our children can get an education. Our school spaces are places where we can exact great cultural change, so it’s no wonder these are now places where battles over our values and ideologies are playing out in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Violence is our new normal. We will continue to prepare for and lament these shootings until we make real policy changes to regulate our guns.
